Vietnam Nostalgia (2000)

The artist-collaborated monograph documenting the present collection.

Vietnam Nostalgia monograph cover, VietGallery, 2000.

In 2000, the Vietnam Nostalgia monograph was produced in collaboration with Bùi Hữu Hùng to document a focused period of his lacquer practice. The volume — bilingual, hardbound, printed under the VietGallery imprint — gathers forty-eight large-format works completed in the years on either side of the millennium, when Hùng's Royal Nostalgia iconography reached the form for which he is now most recognized. The artist participated directly in the selection, sequencing, and presentation of the works.

Twenty-five years later, those forty-eight works comprise The Vietnam Nostalgia Collection. They have remained a single body during the intervening period and are presented here together for the first time in their digital form.

For collectors, curators, and institutions, the original 2000 monograph is itself a primary-source provenance document — a contemporaneous publication, made with the artist, photographing each work as it stood in the years immediately following its making. We retain a small number of hardbound copies and a high-resolution digital edition.
